Wireless Internet ends at rest areas |
| Wireless Internet access will no longer be available at Washingtons highway safety rest areas due to a lack of consistent users.
In 2006, more than two dozen of the states rest areas became wi-fi hotspots, enabling travelers to look up current road conditions, check e-mail and gather other travel information on their wireless devices.
The system was a partnership with Parsons Transportation Group and Road Connect Inc., with the state sharing a portion of the revenue generated by subscriptions. The system was paid for solely by Parsons and Road Connect. The lack of revenue generated from subscriptions prompted the two companies to discontinue the service effective Sept. 1.

Is it time for IT department to learn the Mac?
Could embracing Mac skills propel your career forward if more corporate IT departments decide they need to support this platform?
By Deb Perelman
From eWeek Online |
| Mac skills have long been seen as superfluous for IT professionals; Apple platforms are rarely used in medium and large enterprises, and not even the release of the OS X operating system chipped away at Windows claim on the IT department. Yet some observers feel that this is set to change. Between October 2007 and January 2008, two dozen researchers at IBM participated in an internal pilot program designed to investigate the possibility of migrating employees to the Mac platform. At the end of the trial, 86 percent of the testers asked to continue using their Macs, leading IBM to plan to expand the pilot to 100 users by the end of 2008... (Full Article) |
Its the Amateur Radio Service
By Jim Kendall, KE7JMY |
| When you hear about Amateur Radio Operators, or hams, what probably most sticks in your mind, in glowing letters four inches tall, is the word Amateur. Upon which, depending on your inclinations or perhaps vocation, your lip may curl ever so slightly. It could be a sneer, or it could be a smile. You may have an image of a young boy with a clunky soldering iron, smoke curling up from the tip, bent over some mysterious metallic clutter. You may think of hearing a seemingly endless stream of dots and dashes running together in an incomprehensible stream. You wonder how anyone could sit still long enough to learn how to do all that geeky stuff... (Full Article) |
